    The lonely come
    Choosing
    The cool, dark corner
    Back to a wall
    A safe place, to watch

    Allowing time to escape
Sipping their latte, until it goes cold
    Poking at their toast
    Perhaps a bite or two
    Just to pretend

    Looking out
    Carefully
So as not to be seen
    Eyes wandering, hoping
For a spell, an answered prayer
    Something
    To change their day
    To renew their life
    To bring salvation
    But nothing there
    That the end might deliver

    Anxiety again
    Welling up inside
    Hands clasp tightly
    Feet shuffling on the floor
    Stay a little longer
    Or retreat back home
    To the comfort of sameness
    But –

    Somewhere, nearby
    Eyes catch another’s
    Fleeting glance
    Quickly turn away
    No, no, not the way
    Look again
    Empty
    Nothing left to hope
    Nothing
    Nothing

    Uncomfortable
    Anxiety overwhelms
Got to go, got to go
    Monotony calls
    The endless repeat of today
